Teatro do Biombo is a Lisbon based Portuguese theatre company created in 2010 by Joana Capucho (artistic director) and Miguel Mata Pereira (educational psychologist). Their goal and will is to create plays for babies and very small children since this specific age group has been put aside from cultural projects.
The company works with multidisciplinary professionals, depending on each project (musicians, dancers, artists…).
All our work is dedicated to the same age group: the youngest of all audiences - babies, toddlers and small children.
All our performances derive from an intense classroom experience experienced and lived within babies and toddlers.
We present our shows in different venues, nurseries and pre-schools.
So far we have no public funds or allowances, but we allocate the ticket’s sale to be reinvested in the company’s development.
Our main goals
Create strong and beautiful performances suitable for babies, toddlers and their families.
Create shows that engage the audience: whether through interactivity, live music, visual impact or sensorial stimulation.
Present the audience with performances that promotes space for babies and children to fantasize and do not impose any kind of moral judgment.
Attract families to theatre halls and to shows that they can all enjoy and be part of.
For nurseries and pre-schools:
Involving young children in artistic learning activities and performances.
Developing creative activities with babies in their classrooms.
Developing drama lessons in pre-schools.
Workshops for teachers/caretakers and people who work creatively with children, to encourage and foster education through art.
So far, we have created two shows for babies and toddlers that toured nationally and internationally. Please click here for photos and videos.
For nurseries and pre-scholls:
We have created tree shows for babies that we regularly present in nurseries.
Joana Capucho (artistic director) develops an atelier Histories com Teatro (stories with theatre) weekly and monthly in different nurseries in Lisbon.
We were very proud to participate in the following international Theatre Festivals for very young children:
